Expository Writing with Purpose
Today’s student needs to be able to write thoughtfully about real world events and respond articulately to a variety of prompts. Teachers can enhance students' expository writing by using mentor texts as models and reader’s-writer’s notebooks as tools to guide thorough planning, organized thinking, and purposeful collaboration. Come write with us in this workshop to learn how reader’s writer’s notebooks may be used as a tool to facilitate student expression within the expository genre.
Book is optional: Nonfiction NotebooksStrategies for Informational Writing by Aimee BucknerAimee Buckner has introduced writer's notebooks to hundreds of classrooms through her popular book Notebook Know-How, thereby helping students everywhere learn to improve their overall writing by focusing on essential prewriting strategies. Now, using the same format, Aimee explains how writer's notebooks can help students improve their nonfiction writing—reports, articles, memoirs, essays, and so forth.

Backward Design (using Designing Rigorous Units of Instruction & ARRC model) (K-5)
Thinking about what to teach and how to teach it may dominate your thinking. The challenge is to first focus on the desired learning from which appropriate teaching will logically follow.
Too many teachers focus on the teaching and not the learning. If you’re ready to change that, then you’d enjoy this training. You will leave this training understanding why planning backward is best and gain knowledge on how to go through the backward design process. This training will be productive for teams to work together, whether there are two of you or an entire team, because there will be time to plan a unit using the backward design process. (If you are the only one from your team, you can work with teachers from your grade level.) Just think of the advantages of starting school with a math unit already designed!

The following aspects of research will be explored in this three hour workshop: helping students to define a topic and an inquiry question that is meaningful, chunking the research process into manageable pieces, scaffolding note taking and outlining, identifying reliable sources and available resources in RRISD, writing an effective thesis statement, and assessing student learning throughout the process. Teachers will leave the training with ideas for resources and strategies to build research success and enhance their curricula by incorporating ways for students to ""own"" their learning and gain confidence in their reading, writing, and researching skills.

ASCA Program Model Overview - RRISD ONLY
School counseling programs are collaborative efforts benefiting students, parents, teachers, administrators and the overall community. School counseling programs should be an integral part of students' daily educational environment, and school counselors should be partners in student achievement. The question has been posed, "What do school counselors do?" The more important question is, "How are students different as a result of what school counselors do?" To help answer this question, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) created the ASCA National Model®, which is a framework for a comprehensive, data-informed school counseling program. At this seminar, ASCA trainer Mark Kuranz will provide an overview of the Program Model. The morning will include information helpful for campus administrators.

Team Building with Dr. Debbie Estes
Some of our most memorable moments in life are brought forth while working with a group of people who share a common purpose–a team. Since the foundation of quality is teamwork, the purpose of this presentation is to explore ways to create more quality and success within teams.

This seminar focuses on participative leadership, shared responsibility, and creating a climate of trust and honest communication between team-members. To achieve this, each member must first recognize and develop their own finest attributes, and as well distinguish the characteristics of others in their team.

Teambuilding will provide an opportunity for participants to discover the nature of cognitive styles and their implications by taking the self-assessment instrument developed by Dr. Anthony Gregorc. This experiment will help team-members to develop or “unwrap” their own abilities while making them aware of possible reasons for conflict within all teams in which they participate.

GT Update 3-8: Creativity in the 21st Century Classroom (Out of District Presenter - David Sebek) - FULL CLASS
Sir Ken Robinson, in his 2008 TED Talk, speaks about how we, as educators, are preparing students for a world we can't even imagine. How do we do that within our current pedagogical frameworks? It is time to rethink the traditional classroom model, to change the structures of our classrooms to meet the needs of 21st century learners. Our job as educators is to create dynamic arenas of change, to help students leverage information. We don't know what the world will look like in the next 15 years but we know that students who are autonomous, independent, active producers will be ready to think and work in an ever changing environment.
